A Comparative Character Study: Taxi Driver vs Drive

But I had this idea to shoot it like a fairy tale, essentially Drive took on this fairy tale structure, you know, you have the archetype of the night who roams the wasteland in search of a woman to save. He even has a jacket with a scorpion on as his symbol. And it’s a movie about a man who has difficulty dealing with reality, the Driver character is essentially psychotic but he’s not psychopathic, because he has a lot of empathy and purity, but he’s psychotic in his behaviour; he’s willing to go to great lengths to protect what is pure. He’s almost a man who doesn’t belong in our time anymore. So, the characters became very archetypal.

[Driver meets Shannon after he’s killed one of Nino’s thugs in front of Irene]
Driver: They came to my apartment, Shannon. How did they know where I live?
Shannon: I told you, I was gonna call Bernie. I just wanted him to know that…that it wasn’t about that you’re not interested in the money. That you…you just did it for the girl.
[suddenly Driver grabs Shannon by the throat in anger]
Shannon: Calm down!
Driver: You told them about Irene?
Shannon: Calm down, kid! That’s it! Just calm down!
Driver: You told them about Irene?
Shannon: I just…I just wanted him to know, that as soon as you return the money, that was the end of it. That’s all! I didn’t know! How was I supposed to know? How was I supposed to know that? Okay? Look, let me just…let me just talk to Bernie, okay?
Driver: Why you gotta fuck everything up, Shannon? Huh? Why do you fuck everything up?

But like, you never know. I mean, remember when Annie Hall beat out Star Wars and Kramer vs. Kramer took out Apocalypse Now?

So, like a blind date goes; nobody was going to get action. ‘Please take me home’… And in the car driving back through Santa Monica where I was staying in a hotel Ryan turns on the radio, just to break the uncomfortable silence – I think he just wanted to get away and I just wanted to lie down and slip into a fever dream – and REO Speedwagon’s ‘Can’t Fight This Feeling’ comes on. For some strange reason that song does something for me – and you know when you have a fever, you’re emotions are heightened – and I start just singing to this song. I’ve never done that in front of other people, but I was really singing at the top of my lungs and getting into it, and Ryan was just sitting there probably thinking ‘How the hell do I get this guy out of here?!’ I turned to him for the first time and just screamed in his face. By this point I’d turned the music up so loud that you couldn’t do anything but scream, but I really yelled in his face. I got it. In that moment, I knew what Drive was: a movie about a man who drives around at night listening to pop music because that’s his emotional release. And that’s how the movie was born. My movie.
