In a comical vein, years later, Rowlands told the story of how during the final months of finishing Shadows, Cassavetes was so absorbed in his work that he briefly ‘forgot’ that they had a child. Only a few days after their first son, Nicholas, was born, Cassavetes flew to Los Angeles to begin work on the Staccato series, leaving her alone in New York. She flew to the West Coast by herself a few weeks later and met him at his office. After a little chitchat, she impatiently inquired, ‘Aren’t you going to ask about the baby!?’ ‘What baby?’ Cassavetes replied.
