Kirsten had recently come out of rehab. Do you think she has a special understanding of melancholia?
Oh, absolutely. I don’t know whether she had depression, but she had absolute knowledge of this. It’s really difficult to show the transformation. Because when you are in this melancholia state, you are normally smiling a lot. But you’re smiling in another way – there’s nothing there when you look in their eyes. And I think she does that really well.
Are you taking any drugs for your depression right now?
I’m on a very small pill for depression. I used to take a terrible pill that I found out doubled the alcohol effect by four. And if you knew what I’ve been drinking, then four is a lot.
There’s a golf course in Melancholia with a Hole 19. Can you explain?
Yes, Hole 19! That’s where I am right now – in limbo! Yes.
